Gup Self Defense Requirments

A brief overview of Gup Self Defense Requirements are noted below. These are not intended to replace instruction or practice but are for quick reference. Demonstration of these techniques will be required at each Gup Test.

White Belt to Yellow Belt

  1. Grab on the same side, pivot out and escape against the grabber’s thumb, loading to the opposite shoulder. Using the same hand that was grabbed, deliver a back fist followed by a reverse palm heel strike.
  2. Grab on the same side with 2 hands. Kick the elbow up and then punch straight down, Circle the grabbed hand around to a back first followed by a reverse punch.
  3. Same side grab. Stop, drop and roll to the outside.

Yellow to Orange Belt

4. Same side grab, with 2 hands-on 1, thumbs on top. Take the free hand to hold or grab the hand. Pivot out and escape against the grabber’s thumb pulling against the attacker’s hand like a lever, loading to the opposite shoulder. Using the same hand that was grabbed, deliver a back fist followed by a reverse palm heel strike.

5. Grab on the same side. Circle to the outside, catching the attacker’s hand between the thumb and pointer finger; push the attacker away against their arm..

6. Grab either a ponytail, backpack, hoodie, or the back of the uniform from behind. The defender turns into the arm grabbing, delivering a downward palm or knife hand strike to the grabbing arm to achieve release. Follow up with a palm heel to the face.

Orange Belt to Orange with 1 Stripe

7. Same side grab. Open hand, tilting to the sky; then turn palm up moving against the thumb. (Up, over and out!) At the same time, pivot in the direction of the release. Follow up with a hammer fist delivered by the opposite hand and a reverse palm strike.

8. Same side grab. Turn your hand so the back of the attacker’s hand is facing up; peel the pink, being sure to grab the meat of the hand at the same time. Front kick.

9. Both hands are grabbed. To escape, turn your thumbs to your chest and roll or snap your hands inward. Up, over and out is also a reasonable escape. Follow-up required.

Orange Belt with 1 Stripe to Green Belt

10. 2-handed lapel grab. Break the grab with a windmill block. coming down with the flat of your hand against the joint. Deliver a palm to the face with the other hand

11. Chokehold from behind. Turn into the bent elbow to escape. Follow-up required.

12. 2 on grab; Break the grab with a windmill block. coming down with the flat of your hand against the joint. Deliver a palm heel strike to the face with the other hand.

Green Belt to Green with 1 Stripe

13. Full nelson hold from behind. The defender shoots hands/arms straight up and slides to the floor.

14. 1/2 Nelson hold from behind.

15. Bear hug from behind; arms pinned to the side. Deliver repeated elbow and/or hammer fist strikes to the groin. Inhale deeply, drop weight slightly and explode upward, lifting holding arms off you. Drop down and escape.

Green with 1 Stripe to Green with 2 Stripes

4 individual cross grips. The first set is grabbing one hand across the body. Escape and follow-up are determined by the student. Both left and right hands should be grabbed.

Green with 2 Stripes to Red Belt

4 individual same-sided grabs. This set is grabbing directly across to the defender. Escape and follow-up are determined by the student. Both left and right hands should be grabbed.

Red Belt to Red Belt with 1 Stripe

2 cross-grips. These are 2 hands grabbing across to both hands of the defender. Escape and follow-up are determined by the student.

Example escape: Circle to the outside and down, delivering a palm heel with the free hand.

Red Belt with 1 Stripe to Red Belt with 2 Stripes

2 cross-grips. These are 2 on 1 – the attacker grabs one hand with both of their hands. Escape and follow-up are determined by the student. Both left and right hands should be grabbed.
